What are hot and cold packs?

Hot and cold packs are pouches filled with a special gel that retain heat or cold. They are ideal for cooling sports injuries such as bruises. There is also another type of hot and cold pack, the instant cold pack, which can be cooled simply by applying pressure to a marked area. It is particularly useful where a hot and cold pack cannot be used, such as on outings.

Using hot and cold packs

When using hot and cold packs, always place a cloth between the pack and the skin to prevent burns from heat or cold!

Use as a cold pack

Place the pack in the freezer for about 2 hours; it can then be used immediately. To ensure that a pack is ready for immediate use when needed, a pack should always be kept in the freezer.

Use as a heat pack

Place the pack in water heated to approximately 80 °C and warm it for about 5 – 10 minutes. The pack is then ready for immediate use.
